About the Show:
For our holiday show this year,
we feature a Greenland Inuit Style Kayak by Dr. Mark Braun to benefit local
Bainbridge Island-based international NGO Educational Empowerment. In addition,
we will feature new work from a number of artists represented by the Gallery,
including studio furniture and sculpture, textiles and wearable art, paintings
and prints, ceramics and jewelry. The Gallery represents more than 100 artists
both locally and internationally.
Greenland Inuit Style Kayak to Benefit Educational Empowerment
This
lovely example of an ocean-going kayak, developed in Greenland over 4000 years
ago, was constructed by Dr. Mark Braun on Bainbridge Island. Dr. Braun devoted more than 60 hours to
construction, using straight-grain premium woods and hand-stitching the
covering with many yards of waxed dental floss. In lieu of historic seal skins,
nylon was used and then carefully covered with eight coats of varnish. Dr. Braun’s interest in native culture
influenced the kayak’s aesthetics.
Assisted by a local artist, Dr. Braun completed a number of iconic
Northwest native designs and hand-carved four soapstone “toggles” for the bow. A “Raven compass” watches over the paddler
while two eyes, one on each side of the bow, guide the vessel. Total weight of
the kayak is 35 pounds. A professional hoist is included. Kayak has been water tested, and is basically
unused. Dr. Braun gifted the kayak to local 501©3 non-profit Educational
Empowerment, to which proceeds from the sale of the kayak will be donated.
Mark Braun, retired physician, college professor and
part-time anthropologist, lives during the year in Indiana, and has spent
summers on Bainbridge for the past 20 years. He has had a life-long interest in
Native American water craft and was particularly taken with the elegance and
simplicity of construction of Eskimo-style kayaks. Experimental study has
always held his interest, so Mark set about studying and building a center-seam
Greenland Eskimo style kayak. Power tools were used for a few steps of preparation
of materials for the boat, but otherwise the kayak was constructed by hand. All
materials come from local sources. Its first launch was in Eagle Harbor. He
carved the hood ornaments and the paintings were inspired by friend and local
Bainbridge artist, James Bender.
Educational Empowerment is a local Bainbridge Island-based
international NGO which empowers women and girls in Myanmar (formerly Burma)
through education and equal opportunity, with a vision of improving
socio-economic well-being and creating general parity. By partnering with local
community organizations in Myanmar, EE accomplishes its mission through the
publication of books, development of schools and libraries, and provision of
microfinance loans to enable women to become self-sufficient and their
daughters to complete their education.
The kayak, built and donated by Mark Braun, is being sold to benefit
EE. The purchase is tax-free. EE Board
chair and Founder Melody Mociulki lives on Bainbridge Island.
